Re: New at drumming, pointers?

Thanks to everyone who given advice I somehow managed to break 2 pairs of sticks in one day. One pair was already chewed up from my dad using them, and the other pair... I got a little crazy and smacked my ride a little hard.

If you can't afford an instructor:

There are many free lessons on YouTube. Learn some rudiments first. Your timing will come to you when you can keep a constant beat with time.

Try to get with the Moeller Method. Start off right and take your time.

Hang with the Jim Chapin and Jacob Kaye at first. Then work on your timing.

Re: New at drumming, pointers?

First off, welcome to the world of drumming and welcome to the site.

I started playing about 40 years ago, so you'd think I know nothing about starting out.

In January of 2008 I suffered a stroke. In May of the same year I suffered a second stroke. I had to relearn a lot more than just how to play the drums.

After two years, I now feel like a drummer again.

Go slow and work on smoothness and time. It will pay dividends in the rest of what you learn.

I would say maybe try to keep a simple beat going with just the hi-hat and add the bass in a little later once you have a consistent beat going.
Metronomes or counting in your head will help too. Just count 1 2 3 4 and repeat.
My sticks are screwed up pretty bad too. Not much to worry about there.
Happy drumming, and I'll see you around!

Get lessons. A good teacher is invaluable. Yes rudiments and begginner beats are boring but you must walk before you run. Most people I know who are "self taught" are just really bad and try to bluff that they're original.

Re: New at drumming, pointers?

If at all possible you should look into drum lessons they work if your doing it a month and your having problems your just having beginners problems, these problems can all be straightened out in a lesson or two. I know I teach as well as play at gigs all these ideas your getting are good if you know how to use them if you don't know how to control your hand and foot what good is a metronome going to do other than confuse you, and you can;t get a technique until you can control what your doing. Your obviously just banging on your snare and trying to keep up with your Bass and it's not coming out right try a few lessons you'll really like them GOOD LUCK
