New at drumming, pointers?

So, I'm new at drumming. I just got mine a month ago. All I really want to know is, anyone have any pointers for me? I don't know if this is the right section for this. I sometimes find it hard to keep my right hand going a constant speed when I try to push down the kick pedal fast. I normally end up going faster. Theres more stuff I could say but I dont think theres enough room. Oh yea, and I screw up my sticks pretty bad, it looks like someones been at them with a knife. Is that supposed to happen or am I hitting my hi hat wrong? Thanks for the help in advance.

If your having trouble keeping time I recommend listening to a metronome in headphones and play to that. If you've been using those sticks for a month that is normal. Make sure your getting hickory or oak sticks that are about medium weight and thickness if you want them and your heads and cymbals to last longer.

OK, Thanks. I've been getting hickory sticks, I think they're Vater. I guess I have to go out and buy a metronome now.

If you have an Ipod touch or iphone there's free metronome apps you can get and if you have a laptop you can download free metronome programs
this is the program I like to use (It's free)
Metronome Software - Computer Metronome for Musicians
Also those sticks sound like good ones what is the weight of the sticks? There should be a number on them like 5B or 8N or something like that

Well I don't have an Iphone or ipod touch (friends were just here, should of used on of theirs) or a laptop o.o and one pair of sticks I have are Vater Destroyers, and I can't tell the weight because almost all the print on the side of the sticks has faded away, but my other two pairs (well technically one pair now.) are Vater SD9

You should be able to get a relatively cheap metronome from a music store then. As for your sticks thats about the same kind I use just a different brand. I'd have to say you're probably not hitting anything too hard or playing incorrectly If you've been using them for a month. If I use one pair for a month they get pretty beat up.

Hmm, the only pointers I can give is, practice your fundamentals, use a metronome ( if you dont have one just count in your head or out loud ) and if your trying to nail a part, dont play it fast, break it down from snare, to bass pedal to high hat ( or which ever works for you ), and play slower, remember its harder to play slower than faster!
Cheers, and good luck with your drumming

Now is a good time to pick the technique you want to use down the road. Look at all the different choices and pick one and stay with it. For instance I learned to play with my right hand on the hats and left on the snare. I now want to play open. It is much harder to switch techniques once youve learned one. so pick the one you want and go with it.

Re: New at drumming, pointers?

I would have to disagree buddy, both open handed playing and right hand playing have been useful to me. Learning many techniques can be very beneficial down the road. For instance some fills I play in songs are much easier to play coming from open hand player rather than closed. It's good just to learn both to be safe. This really goes with anything else in drumming too such as learning different styles of playing. Stuff I play in jazz band at school have influenced fills I play in rock in metal.

Re: New at drumming, pointers?

If your only a month into playin on the kit you got no worries. The timing will come with practice. As for the sticks as others have said, prolly time for a change. I use a set for 1 show and then they go in the practice stick bag. But if money is an issue you can lower your hi hat a lil to play them with the tip so they dont get so chewed up. Also angle your cymbals down a little also, that help with the sticks plus its not as hard on the cymbal.
