Single hits around the set

I am poor with terminology so be patient with me. I am reading a book that ask me to do this fill around the set and I am having trouble with the sticking. I own a 5 piece set.

it is 4/4 time and the first 2 beats are just the beat. Then it asked me to hit a single quarter note from snare-to-tom-to-tom-floor tom, and then repeat. should there be cross-sticking or what? I asked someone else and they as well are only used to one fill around the set, not two in a row, any advice?!? Thanks!

Re: Single hits around the set

I'm right handed, and I would hit the snare with my left, and the toms with my right. No cross sticking. But I don't know if that's really the right way.

Re: Single hits around the set

You know I was just working on that very problem yesterday for about a half hour. thats all it took ok im right handed. so I hit the snare with my left; hit the first tom with my right; take my right arm and raise it up way high like you show ing off and throw your left hand under it to hit the second tom; and finally slam you're right hand back down on the floor tom

It should flow with the whole arm raising thing plus it looks cool from a spectators angle and looks way harder then it is if done right drummer trickerie

Re: Single hits around the set

So there is no way of doing it starting with your right hand? I suppose with your left your can eliminate cross-sticking! Is that approach going to work when you speed up the fill? Doing that twice around the set wouldn't slow you down?

Re: Single hits around the set

Let's see. We're talking about hitting the snare and three toms in the space of one beat in 4/4 time? It depends on the tempo, of course.

I think you could hit the snare with the right, the first tom with the left, and the second tom with the left, and the floor tom with the right. That's not really cross sticking.

And however you do it, it will probably feel awkward at first. So start really slow and gradually build up speed.

How does that sound?

Re: Single hits around the set

Buddy, I found that your idea was good if you did one cycle around the set, however it was rather difficult to make a smooth transition to the second time around the set.

Dtreme I liked going left first, but again I found it hard to go from one cycle to a second cyle around the set without it sounding like there was a pause between.

I tried going right snare-left first tom-right second tom-left floor tom...then-cross for right snare-left tom 1-to right for second tom and floor tom, I felt this pattern was pretty successful...thoughts???

Re: Single hits around the set

just do it however it feels best and work with it. some stuff feels really wrong when you first learn it, but after you practice it and get it down it feels like any other way would be wrong, it becomes second nature and feels good.

as for that last pattern you tried, sounds fine as long as its comfortable and you can play the fill that way.

good luck and happy drumming

Yeah, Golden Child -- it's whatever works best for YOU. I'm pretty sure that the way I suggested would work best for me, and ultimately, you need to find what works for you.
You said it was successful -- that's the whole enchilada.

Keep workin' and rockin'!
