Re: Question for non-cross sticking

Your fills will be played the exact same way they would be if you were playing crossed sticked. The only difference would be that you would not need to uncross your hands to start the fill.

Re: Question for non-cross sticking

So you want to start with the right hand for all fills? How do you end on 1 with the left?

Re: Question for non-cross sticking

Not necessarily. If you were for instance playing a triplet run, you might start with the left. The only thing different about playing open handed is that you hit the hi hat with your left hand and play the snare with the right. Your tom fills would be played the same as if you were playing the hat with the right hand and the snare with the left hand.

Re: Question for non-cross sticking

Re: Question for non-cross sticking

It just feels uncomfortable ending on a right 1 when your playing whatever rhythm you have open-handed left on 1, how do you compensate?

Re: Question for non-cross sticking

right im so confused now right im gonna make it simple
say im playing a basic beat:
bass and snare and bass and snare and
and playing hi hats on and between every 1, 2, 3 and 4
im playing it open handed with my left hand, i take four strokes on the snare, in time obviously, i will then go back into the beat by hitting the crash on the 1 with my right hand and carrying on the hi hat with my left hand on the and after 1
i do that with more complicated fills so i dont have to rush my left hand back across the kit in half a beat,

Re: Question for non-cross sticking

That makes sense, hitting a cymbal on one then going back to left hand hi-hat, this is crazy...I should just go back to cross-stick! XD
I also understand the triplet run, because that is usually inbetween two different hi-hat beats say 1 triplet 2, I just get stuck with what I said before...I'll never figure this out!

Yeah, I guess stick with R hand when coming off of the hi-hat!

Re: Question for non-cross sticking

Now that your melon is mush think about this.....if you were to add a remote hi hat to the right side of your kit you would always have a hat to continue with regardless of the situation.
