Question for non-cross sticking If you have a right-handed drum set set-up and play without the traditional cross-stick approach, when performing fills should you generally start with the right hand still? |

Re: Question for non-cross sticking like i said in your other post about single hits around the kit, it doesnt really matter what hand you start with, unless you are working from a book or video that specifically instructs you to use a certain hand.
do whatever feels comfortable and comes the most natural.
hope this helps

Re: Question for non-cross sticking well im right handed and when i do a fill while playing open handed ive got into the habit of still starting fills with my right hand and if i finish the fill with my left hand i start the beat with my right hand and then quickly switch back to open handed, which i know sounds awkward but i find it easier than quickly moving my left hand back if the fill has a pause before going back into the beat though i just start open handed |

Re: Question for non-cross sticking Jolfy it sounds like you are right dominant, that is how I felt first. I said oh damn, I do have a left hand. It is hard to play with the left leading a fill, but at least from my minimal experience at open-handed, is feels like the appropriate way to fill in order to land 1 on the hi-hat, it just takes practice |

Re: Question for non-cross sticking Are you talking about while you are playing open-hand? If you play with left hand starting any fills, then there should be no crossing...hence the beauty of open-hand drumming?!?! |

Re: Question for non-cross sticking So I'm confused, when do you cross your sticks when you play a fill that's too fast? |

Re: Question for non-cross sticking when i play open handed i still have the kit setup like someone right handed who crosses his sticks so i have to cross my hands over if i start with my left hand and go down the toms for example |

Re: Question for non-cross sticking I am just trying to picture correctly, your playing open-handed (L) on hi-hat; you wanna fill. If you start with the snare with (L) hand, then tom (R), tom (L), and floor tom (R) leaving it so you can end on 1 with (L) on hi-hat. Now, if you are going from that set-up straight to a tom, I would suggest going right first in-order to prevent cross-sticking (which is why someone tries open-handed in the first place right?). A way to prevent ending with a right on one could be be double tapping the right stick somewhere in you fill? Am I helping at all? Then you would not cross-sticks. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
