I allways have played it placed only 3" above the snare ( my snare is placed allmost level to my legs). This way I can rock but also play more delicate with the tip of my sticks. Works great in ride/hi-hat combo's
We don't know how tall you are or how long your arms are, or whether you like to play down low, in the middle, or up high. Put your high hat where you want it -- where it feels right.

Yea what He Said. Just do what feels right for you.
It Really is a Matter of preference. To try to help if you are using the traditional grip, you need the Hats high enough to prevent your sticks from clicking together. If your using the matched grip It's not as easy for the sticks to collide. The important thing is to have the Hats at a hieght that allows you to maintain a relaxed movement and srill not interfere with the snare hand. Don't place it where you over extend your reach, but don't bring it too close in either.
Really Experiment with it and find a balance that allows you to manipulate the stick action as naturally as possible. The Key is freedom of movement and expression.
Mine Is 10 inches above my snare and eight inches to the left, its a little tight in but thats to tie it to my left kick pedal alowing me to play both if I like.
Basically I agree with what everyone has said. Drums can be set up in infinite configurations, set it up one way, then play a song or two and see if it helps or hinders. Lather rinse repeat until it feels natural.
