Re: How did you choose drums as your instrument? How did you get behind a drumset?

Thanks, deanc54.

After a 30-year layoff from the drum scene, writing those is one way I learn some stuff and get my head back into drumming.

By the way, I'm no history resource. As I research those I learn about one drummer at a time. It's fascinating to me, though.

Hey Dtxt,

As I scroll back up through the posts, I have to disagree with you..an outstanding history resource you are. You know, I think your enlightening posts serve to illustrate that even the legends in drumming (and all music superstars) have to start somewhere, and oft times they come from incredibly humble beginnings. I sure wish I could travel back in time and rethink the choice I made to take a 40+ year hiatus. So, all you youngsters out there who love music and aspire to play an instrument..,no matter what, if you like it stick with it! No one gets really good at anything if they don't recognize the challenges and make the decision to work through the hard parts until they get it right. Practice and play every day, learn all you can from everyone who is willing to offer up their expertise, and stay inspired. This site appears to be 'full of stars'. I'm very gratefull. Perhaps I'm (sniff, sniff..sob, sob) 'not worthy'!

My father is a musician and my grandfather was one as well I guess it runs in the family. When I was 8 I got my first kit for Christmas and it blew me away. To my surprise I didn't have a clue what kind they were then I looked at the badge and it said Ludwig. The kit was blue sparkle. It was a 6 pc kit db base 2 rack toms 12" and 13" a 14" floor tom and a 14x8 snare and had Zildgian cymbals. 14" hats 16" crash, 18" crash, and a 20" ride. I never took lessons I learned to read music all on my own and have been reading music ever since.

Hey thundafoot,

Holy Moly! Did you have the presence of mind to hang on to that historic Ludwig kit? A family heirloom for sure. That's quite a heartwarming Christmas tale. Did you ask your folks how the heck Santa got it down the chimney? Was Ringo Starr there to present it to you?

Hey Beholdthecoma!

One can never born to late to cover the classics! Stick to your guns and play the music you like, and continue to be challenged by some of the stuff that is not on the top of your list. I never thought in a million years I wqould be playing a bit of Country & Western live. Ages ago when I was 16, I hated C&W. Now, I am actually singing a few Johnny Cash tunes with the band, and lovin' it!. I will always be a rocker in my soul, but it is truely enlightening to try new things. Always try to keep your mind & heart open to those new things, & try not to worry too much about what other closed minded folks may think.

unfortuneatly no. I know I had them for about 10 yrs before I traded them for some Pearls. I know now that they would be worth more than the best DWs. I was young and didn't know what I had.
lol that was a good one.

I know exactly how you feel thundafoot.

I gave my 1959 Ludwig kit to a church that my mother attended. That was over 30 years ago. Got married, had no room or storage so I donated it.

Well at least it was for a good cause. Even though I'm no Christian.

Hey Thundafoot,

Do you have any photo's of you as a youngster playing this classic kit? They would be great to see!

Well, the first time was when I was 11 I sat behing a Starclassic Bubinga that was on display at Guitar Center. I sat behind it and loved it with a passion and started playing the intro to The Outlaw Torn by Metallica. Then a little later on I got Guitar Hero World Tour and Guitar Hero Metallica and played drums on both and worked my way up to expert. Then even further on I was able to transfer the sounds that I heard to the drums and had no problem with coordination. I now am that proud owner of a Tama Imperialstar 7 piece and anyone who hears me gets blown away (I personally think i suck ass but meh).
