Moving around the toms.

I am pretty great at drums but what I mess up is with tom fills that go in 16th notes equally like. Snare 4 16th note tom1 tom2 tom3 with the same equal pattern. I find it hard to hit all of them equally when playing fast. Is there any technique to this?

Practice with a metronome and go slow at first. Then once you master doing the fill at a certain bpm go 5 bpm faster and do that. Just don't rush yourself you will end up being a very sloppy drummer

Re: Moving around the toms.

I found myself practicing 16ths at the different toms individually, one after the other and from the snare and back, every combination you can think of. I try to cement the center of each Tom in my muscle memory so that when you want to hit you don't think you just do.

16ths, triplets, five strokes, just keep going at it with your metronome and pretty soon you'll be rolling around the kit like Dennis chambers.

You could try different types of sticking: RLRL RRLL LRRR and see what works best.

Re: Moving around the toms.

Thanks for the advice. I do however have the habit of hitting the rims sometimes when I fly around the toms, making it sound sloppy. But where can I find a metronome?

I would suggest you call a local music store.

Luckily searching on google I found a virtual one and I have head phones. Practicing these patterns at increasively speeds actually worked pretty well. The RLLL needs practice, I was never that good with the left hand speed.

Re: Moving around the toms.

Curiously, how long should I do this everyday? Is 10 minutes enough? A half hour?

Re: Moving around the toms.

It's up to you. 5-10 minutes is you just want to touch on it every day and improve gradually.
The sky's the limit if you've got the energy for it and decide you're really going to try to groove it. No set rule.
