Making room for double bass pedal?

Well I got my new kit set up today and it looks and sounds sweet!
But my problem is I am a rookie on the double bass. I just picked up a new
"VEX" double pedal and it seems I don't have any room for it.

It could be my style of playing I guess. I play with the left side of the snare
touching the inside of my thigh and my left foot is always on the hihat pedal.
With the snare stand, the hihat and my single bass pedal all being close together,
how do I fit in an extra pedal?

I would like to jump off the hihat and go right to the double but that is just not possible cause the extensions on the double dont go that far.
I also tried putting both pedals right next to each other but it doesn't go IN that far.

If anyone can relate to what I;m saying, could you shoot some advice my way?
Or give some examples on how you set yours up and you playing style...thanks

Re: Making room for double bass pedal?

So you see XanderJ, you need to move your hihat to the left of your double bass pedal. If that moves the cymbals too far to your left to play comfortably, then you'd have to invest in a remote hihat, which is a pedal attached to a wire so the actual cymbals can be mounted in a different location. Or you could practice open handed playing, which means playing the hihat with your left hand.

I prefer two single bass pedals with two bass drums so I can spread them wide and put a hihat stand in the middle, which I can play with my left or right hand. But to each his own.

Good luck. Rock on.

Re: Making room for double bass pedal?

My advice to you would be to put your L pedal about where your hat pedal was, and snug your hat pedal right up to it, as close as possible. The change in your set up will feel strange at first, but trust me, you will get used to it in time. Do you have a drop-lock clutch on your hats? If not I would highly recommend one. The first time I played a double pedal, I nearly fell of my stool from the difference in the set up. But I stuck w/ it, & now I can't imagine playing without it. When I play a single pedal set up now, I feel awkward as hell, & often find myself stomping at the floor where the other pedal should be. Just stick with it & you'll soon feel just as comfortable with the new set up as you did w/ the old. Jam on!!

Yea, you will get used to a slightly different set up. By the way, I also have a Vex pedal and I think it is great. Awesome pedal for the money.

In addition to what has been said already, if you have a hihat with movable legs you can rotate them out of the way of the double pedal so you are not fighting placement of the slave pedal as much.
