I think my most expensive investment was the kit itself. I actually bought that at a store. Other than sticks and a set of new heads I bought a year ago and have yet to put on (thought I'd be moving and didn't want to risk it), I purchase everythng else through eBay. My K-Customs, a set hats, ride and crash, were half what all of that would've cost at the store, even a store like Guitar Center.

I've been sort of putting my percussion ensemble together bit by bit, and it's all been pretty random. I don't collect in a set, really, because I don't have the funds, and I'm just usually experimenting. I basically take what I can get cheap or free. My former boss moved out of the area and actually had a set of cymbals lying around his basement he gave me. I also managed to pick up some cheap equipment at garage sales. Nothing great, but it works for now. I admit I skimp on the instruments, but other equiment I usually pay retail for, as it's harder to find stuff like that at a garage sale. I had to get my shield online (and I needed it to muffle the sound when I practice), but otherwise, that's the most expensive thing I've purchase.
