How to balance learning another instrument?

My son's been learning and playing drums for just over 2 years. He's quite good at drums and doesn't take long to learn new stuff. He can read and even write drum music. But for over a year now he's asked to learn guitar.

For those that have done both, is it better to suspend the drum lessons for a year while he learns guitar? I plan to still keep him practicing drums and learning songs, just not at the pace he'd have if he continued the lessons.

I feel if he's going to learn guitar then he should focus on that for a year and we can re-asses how things should go. But I'm open to hearing other's experiences.

Re: How to balance learning another instrument?

I was self taught for both Guitar and Drums, but I never tried learning them at the same time, I set aside time for each instrument individually. I also found that getting back to drums was much easier after taking a break then getting back to guitar, even over the same period of time.

I've been playing drums for 43 years and I would not stop the lessons, I took lessons for over 13 years. Why stop ? if he can play drums I'm sure he can do 2 things at the same time. Don't you think so??

I was self-taught(for the most part) on guitar and set, so taking a little bit of time off of drums won't hurt him.

But if he is taking lessons on drums, keep him taking lessons and have his guitar lessons on a different day. It'll work dude.

Re: How to balance learning another instrument?

I would say have him practice at least 15 minutes a day on drums, that way he won't have to re-learn any thing once he comes back to them. I took a break from playing marching snare for a few months, and uhh. well that didn't go so well So now i know to practice a lot over the summer so i can be prepared for marching band next year!
