Re: Back pain - someone please help me

I would have it check out by a doctor. A friend of mine got a spinal injuriy from playing drums, but that was from years of playing. Your muscles are probably not yet used to the actions. If it keeps hurting see a doctor.

Hi - new guy here.

I don't know if you've gotten better or not, but to be honest, even if this is new for your back, you shouldn't be suffering any kind of pain at all.

You got your self a good throne, that's great. I'm of the attitude that a throne back rest or even a some kind of support strapped to your back shouldn't be necessary. In fact, wearing those "back belts" like you see guys on construction sites or at the Home Depot, over the long run, have proven that the back actually gets weaker because of an external force keeping it supported.

Your back is important so you should treat it as such. It's the one thing that allows the brain to talk to the rest of your body. I would suggest finding some drummers with experience so they can see what you're doing and if they can provide help. Second, I would seriously see a chiropractor and find out if there's anything going on with your back. Just doing a new activity could have aggravated something 'in the background' that may not be related to the drumming.

Think of your back as a tree, the strong ones are the straight ones. Drumming shouldn't be painful, so I'm thinking you aggravated something big time. If you're young, just realize that it sucks having back problems as you get older!

Just wanted to add that you may not have your drums set the right way for you. You should always be ballanced on the throne and never have to over reach to hit a drum or cymbal. Also you might want to get your shower as hot as you can stand and bend over so that the water sprays on your lower back and just let your body go loose, and you might want to do a few back stretchs before you play, and don't be ridged when you do play, let your mind and body flow with the music you're playing.(forgive my spelling, I'm a drummer not an english major). As far as sitting on a bar stool and swinging your arms and legs around for no reason...I do that all the time.
