offset lugs and funky residue?

Hey all, just have a couple thoughts.

What is the point of offset lugs? I have seen this feature before and I don't understand the point of it.

I have some sort of residue on my bass drum head where the beaters hit and also on the beaters. I doubt this is a problem or anything, I just wonder if any of you experience it or know what causes it. If you want pictures I can get some. It's kind of a whitish powdery stuff.

Thanks and happy drumming

Edit:
Here are some pics

On the head:

On the beaters:

Hey Butter!

Post some pictures so we can take a look at this stuff. It sounds familiar maybe.

Offset lugs are simply cosmetic. They are just there for show. I prefer them because I love the way they look. I don't know what it is about them, especially 3/8 offset.

Hey butter!

Wow that is pretty amazing! Are you using felt beaters? I couldn't tell by the photo's, but if you are it could be a slight degradation of the beater material. I have never seen this before. What I have experienced is a slight residue on my hat and pedal base that comes from the white rubber on my new Van's rubbing off a bit from the pedal work. Yours is really pronounced. Looks like flour or some sort of cosmetic substance. Anyone else have any ideas?

Haha ya it is definitely odd. I am using the plastic side of the beater, so the felt idea is out.
I would say flour is a pretty close comparison, but it seems more moist/wet than that. I actually think if I had a bunch of it, I could sell it as moon sand or something That is what it feels like to me, like the stuff they sell at space museums...

Hey butter!

Realllly weird man! It is odd that it is moist. Is there anything in the environment your drum set is in that would allow this type os substance to collect? I do know that there is a potential for static electricity to accumulate on drum heads that is largely caused by the action of beating on the head. If your head (drum head that is) is statically charged, anything in the proximity that also has some sort of static charge will be drawin to it and collect. Dust is a good example, pet hair another. What is in the room close to your drum head that may collect on the head?
