I just like to jam when I hear the song. I'll play along a couple of times without even listening that much to the drum part so as to get a feel for the song. THEN I go back and actually write out my own part. It almost ALMOST always comes out good
It totally depends on the song and the group of musicians. On the NRBQ songs Me And The Boys and You Can't Hide, one of the pick-up bands I work with performs them exactly like NRBQ. In yet another combo, Four by Miles Davis is totally reworked/rearranged.
