Tryouts

Hey guys. I've been out for awhile. Just been busy. I'll be on more often now. so anyways. got a Q.

This band called "White Line" is local to me. They've opend for groups such as "Judas Priest" and "Tom Petty" They saw a video of me performing. Now they want me to come down and watch a show of theirs in two weeks. I have an inside because they are on my dads golf team. Anyway they've been looking for a drummer for a while now since theirs was all hooked up on drugs and crap. After the show they want me to come down to their studio and jam with them. My dads obviusly gonna be their but I was wondering. What should I do? That sounds wierd I know. Im gonna go obviusly. I just want to know what tryouts are normly like. What have your guys expieriances been like? Should I wright out a solo? IDK. some exprierences you could help me with? Oh yea and they have a record deal with Crowtown Records. no pressure

Re: Tryouts

Buddy,

Great news meester! Listen, I know this will sound like the standard answer but take it to heart.

They know you are going to be a bit nervous so dont freak yourself out if you aren't spot on perfect. In my experience in these situatons what they are looking for is basic fit with the band. They want to know how you are going to interact with the band and the chemistry, after that they would be interested in your style.

The best advice I can give you is to be yourself. Don't get too intense, or try to hotdog. Relax and go with it. Remember they are going to be nervous too. Try to familiarize yourself with a few of their songs. Do all this and you will be fine.

Re: Tryouts

Good Luck on your venture Buddy and hope for the best.

You're there to impress and to show your stuff. Nothing more and nothing less.

You'll know after a few songs if you fit in or not.

Again, good luck.

Re: Tryouts

I think he means don't show off more than your ability allows. Don't overplay... something like that.

Good luck.

Re: Tryouts

Add your own flair.

Make them see you're not just any drummer; stand apart from the crowd.

Re: Tryouts

Get some recordings of them, if you can. Listen to them constantly. Learn the songs backward and forward. Learn the drum parts, memorize the lyrics, be able to sing the guitar solos. I would suggest writing drum charts, if you can. Try to learn the songs as close to the recording as you can, as they are going to be looking for a seamless transition. After playing the songs that way, they may ask you to add some of your own ideas to it.

I would advise against writing out a solo. You will never get a gig based on your ability to solo.

As far as what to expect...

Just expect to play some of their songs. That's probably all it will amount to. Concentrate on keeping good time and playing the song form and everything should be fine.

Good luck and keep us posted!
