How to get a job as a hotel musician? I've been playing drums off and on semi-professionally for about the last ten years or so and a little over a year ago, I decided to take the plunge and quit my day job to pursue drumming as a full-time career. I've been getting by since then teaching private lessons and gigging as much as possible, but my town (Chattanooga, TN) isn't really a music town and students and gigs have really started to dry up in recent months.
So a few months ago, I decided to take the plunge and become a cruise ship drummer. Since then, I've passed on audition with a talent agency and I've even been offered a contract (that I had to pass on for a reason that...well, let's just say I'm a little bitter about it...). Now, I'm not the most patient human being on the planet, but while waiting for another contract I've been exploring other opportunities and I discovered that there are hotels that hire contract musicians in much the same way that cruise lines do. These hotels are primarily in Asia and parts of Africa (such as Dubai in UAE), but I am having a VERY difficult time finding out how to get hired for these positions. After months of searching, I finally found a hiring agency called El-Live Productions, but they apparently keep a rather small staff of artists. I sent them an e-mail anyway, so hopefully I'll hear back from them about an audition.
In a roundabout way, I would like to know if anyone here knows of any agencies that hire musicians for foreign hotels? I'm cool with a long term contract (most cruise line contracts are 3-6 months and El-Live state that theirs are 8-12 months) and would actually prefer that.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. |
