Re: Are drummers geeks This one seems like a fun one. I think most people are responding to being geeky as being geeky about other things.
I have discovered that drummers are generally geeks when it comes to the drums!
I mean, endless gear talk IS geeky, and drummers are just as guilty of that as any other instrumentalist.
Now don't get me wrong, photographers do it, people who shoot guns do it, car people do it. I just consider drum gear talk almost to be the ultimate geeky because it's like talking about Craftsman tools from Sears. You have to have an end result when you talk about tools: building a table or a cabinet, that kind of thing. Likewise, drummers need other musicians to complete the task of playing drums to make music.
So, when I hear a guy griping about how his bass drum pedal isn't working right, or the tone of his snare drum is a little off, it's so out of context with what he's supposed to sound like within the band, I find it funny anyway. And this would be assuming that the primary role is fulfilled - playing time for the band, playing dynamically and all that...
If that isn't fulfilled, then it's just geek-talk. And yeah, I'm guilty of it too. I just hope I catch myself in time before I go too far! |
