Question Drum Kit Size In History

As time goes by, so do numerous variations of kits coming in a multitude of sizes. We've seen and heard the vintage 4 piece jazz-like kits, found during the 60s, to the 20 piece monsters used in the 80s and such, with 5 bass drums and percussion that you didn't think would be useful in the situation. And now, although there is definitely a mix of the two, it seems many younger drummers have reverted to a compact 4-piece kit (one up, one down). While I'm in no means saying that larger drum kits are never used, I do suggest they are being used in lower numbers by new artists and acts. What is your opinion on this trend?

I have switched back and forth between a four, five, and six-piece kit just to keep things fresh. Often, I find myself not needing the extra drums when I have them up, and wishing for more when I'm not using them. To be honest though, I prefer the look of a four piece rock kit more than a larger kit.

Re: Drum Kit Size In History

I like a 1 up 2 down kit in terms of looks. I'm playing a 6 piece right now, but I like a 4 piece best for playing. I agree that the 4 piece is becoming more popular, bands like Attack Attack and TDWP are really influencing alot of drummers in that genre to break down their kits. I don't know why I first tried a 4 piece, but it makes me the most comfortable of any configuration. Coming in close second is 1 up 2 down, though, like I said. It looks a bit cooler, and that extra floor is better than having another tom instead in a 5 piece just because it has the deeper sound.

I play a 5 piece W/ 3 up (ride is where the floor tom should be). I know its a bit unorthodox but it enables me to run down the toms really fast. People tell me that its kinda weird. I tell them i don't give a ***k because its comfy to play.

Ha! I like your attitude Pyrochazm!

I used to play orchestral tympani when I was a student, so I like floor toms. Like Butter I'm drawn to deep sounds. I'm practising with four floor toms, 2 on each side, as well as two bass drums and two hihats...and I've got 4 assorted small toms. So I've got a big kit now, just to practice complete independence.

I always gigged with a 4 piece. I'd have to find or start a progressive rock band or something to get away with the bigger kit. I think the new trend, if you can call it that, is for creative, individual kits. Anything goes. In the earlier decades a lot of us tended to conform like cookie-cutter drummers.

Sounds like you almost have a Bill Bruford style kit, Slingerland59 He definitely wasn't afraid to forget orthodoxy, so you're on the right track, Pyrochazm.
