Re: what are best 2ply heads for gretch britch kit

I have a Gretsch Renown Maple and it has Evans G2 heads on all the toms, and I love it! They have great sustain, great attack and they bring out the tone of the shells wonderfully. I was thinking of swapping out to Evans EC2's but decided against it (don't fix it if ain't broke!)...

Anyway, you'll hear a ton of opinions I'm sure. Remo Pinstripes are nice, but they muffle a lot of tone in addition to the overtones they are designed to "filter" out... Those birch shells will sing nicely in spite of the Pinstripes, but it depends on the sound you are trying to achieve. If you can, try them out (I know its hard to find a drum shop with after market heads on the drums, but this is really the only way to find out if you like the sound).

Here is a video of a guy with a Gretsch Renown Maple and G2 heads--mic'd up of course--and they sound great. Mine sound like this too (after hours of tuning).

The evans EC2's will give good sustain on a quality maple kit. Might be worth a try on your kit.

Re: what are best 2ply heads for gretch britch kit

I have a year old TAMA Starclassic Performer B/B set that came with evans G2 clears on the batter side and G1 clears on the reso side. After six months of hard playing, I decided to try the Aquarian Super 2's on the batter side, and Aquarian Classic Clear's on the reso side. I couldn't be happer with the sound and tuning ability the Aquarians give my set. Also, I swapped the evans heads that came on my Starclassic snare with an Aquarian Hi-Velocity on the batter side. My snare never sounded better. You might want to try the Aquarians. I'm sold.

Re: what are best 2ply heads for gretch britch kit

dude i would go Evans on top they are the deepest i have ever used and are hard wearing Remo spots on the bottom....that should do it...the only other are premier pin stripes but i havnt seem them for ages.. to dampen use duct tape in small amounts top head about i-1 1'2 inch square with a small ball of duct tape underneath on top edge but away from chrome hoop to dampen ......

Re: what are best 2ply heads for gretch britch kit

I used Evans coated G2 for ever then after speaking with Mr Burns (aquarian head maker) he suggested I try the Aquarian coated Response 2 heads for the batter head and the clasic clear on bottom. Wow they sound awesome, then when Aquarian put out the Super 2's, forget about it I was sold. Give them a shot you may be sold too. Keep rockin.

I would suggest Evans Hydraulic Series. They are very easy to tune, long lasting and they make just about any drum sing. They are better quality than Remo or Aquarian. But I would suggest that you shop around, based on your style of playing.
