I completely agree with Brian. I learned that lesson the hard way. When I was a drum teacher as a 20 something know-it-all I had kids sing the beats out loud. One girl asked if she had to and I said yes. She promptly quit. I know I could have taught her things if I had been more flexible with my approach. I also made my son cry when I pushed him too hard to play a beat. I really regret that. None of my kids have become drummers. I've learned not to be such a perfectionist and to have more fun with sounds rather than harping on technique. I would be a much better teacher now. I am a kick-ass drummer but that doesn't always translate into a good teacher!
