Tuning and muffling bass drum for double bass playing

How do you tune and muffle your bass drum for double bass playing? I saw a clip from a pro drummer who said he muffles the drum about half way with heavy pillows to give a hard surface to beat against. The sound quality is fixed up with microphones. I've got my drum stuffed to the hilt for practising. It really is easier to play that way. But it sounds like crap -- no tone or ring like I'd get from an open drum played with a single beater.

I don't muffle my bass drum at all, and I would't think it would make any difference if you have 1 or 2 beaters---if you have butthead neighbors they will ***** no matter what you do---I say lose the pillows and let the drum sing the way it wants to!

No question that it has to do with the sound needed. I have to say that I'm with Hippy Chip, when I play my kick as I set it up (and I don't play double bass, but I do use a double bass peddle), I have either an EQ1 or an EQ2 on the batter, the Reso side is a standard logo head with a felt strip on it (2" wide by like 25" long, vertically just off center), and a kick port in it at the 5:00 position. I have nothing in the drum itself, I remove the pillow (in the case of my DW's), and play it open. My ear really prefers this bass sound. Still plenty of punch, and gives a very large sound...
