Who's a lefty?

I guess it never really occurred to me until I went to my local drum shop the other day. I am a lefty, however, my kit is setup for a right handed player.

My local shop has a lefty setup. Boy was it strange)

I'm not a lefty but I'm curious as to how things are different for lefty drummers. In a lot of sports, lefties have some sort of advantage. They can come at you in different angles.

So in the same light, is there any kind of advantage of being a lefty drummer? The set up would be different but I can't really think of how else things would be different.

Re: Who's a lefty?

I'm a lefty. The whole setup is reversed, or mirrored. However, depending on if you're ambidextrous or left handed, you could be able to play a righty setup better, or both equally good. There isn't much of an advantage that I know of. I guess lefties playing on a right handed kit will play open-handed, which many people claim to be faster.

Re: Who's a lefty?

I'm a lefty but play on a "right-hand" set up.

Sometimes I play open-handed.
Sometimes I lead with my left foot.

When I was a kid learning drums (and jamming with everyone I could play with) all of the drum sets were already set up for "right-ies" so I learned "right-y".
And thankfully so because when I attend a show and I'm asked to come up and sit-in for a few songs it's ONLY right-handed set ups to work with. ...and I've gotten plenty of work this way so imagine if I was pigeon-holed to a left-hand set and had to constantly turn down opportunities to spontaneously "do-work."
Right-handed has been more lucrative for me.

Re: Who's a lefty?

I'm definitely right handed(if I had to feed myself with my left hand I'd probably starve.. LOL) and my kit is set up for a right hander, but I can NOT(and I've tried a LOT) play the hats with my right and the snare with my left. I guess being self taught it comes naturally for me to play the hats with my left and the snare with my right. So I guess that would make me a left handed drummer of sorts.... Maybe??? LOL
