I agree with the notion that strictly reading and playing a piece of music can seem canned and lifeless. A musician must also have some feel for the music as well in order to add body and sometimes flow to the music.


Just because you have a PhD doesn't mean you automatically have common sense, both are needed to be smart. The same goes with music, just because you can read it doesn't mean you have feel and both are needed to be a musician.

Great point! I've heard of people using a metronome too much and losing feel, I'm sure it's a similar effect with strict reading.

Can you develop feel? Or is it something you're born with?

I,m 70 and still playing I don,t read but if I listen most times I can cover the music. I have a few groups that I play with, one is a trio with a B-3 player guitar and drums. We play blues & jazz.I just finished two weekends playing with a 30 piece German band for Octoberfest, was a great time and something different My favorite music is 50,s& 60,s Rock& roll. I,m still living the dream music foever. jz.
