Confidence and beginning?!?!

Hi. I have been a percussionist for a little over six years. I touched on drums a little bit when I was younger (and was actually quite good), but eventually stopped playing drums and started playing mallets. I am the only girl in my section and i have trouble playing anything except for mallets in front of any of the guys. We are all friends but I am just not confident enough. I am in tenth grade right now and I made a goal of being in jazz ensemble by the time I am a senior. Where do I even begin with drumset and how do I build up confidence?? Im sure this will help more than just me!!

Re: Confidence and beginning?!?!

Welcome to the forum Do you have a set or access to one? Look up lessons on youtube and if you want, find a teacher. After you learn some cool stuff, your confidence will start to grow.

Check out spikeydrummer on youtube.

Good luck and happy drumming!

Re: Confidence and beginning?!?!

Any update Sarah? I found mallet playing was more nerve racking because a single wrong note sticks out like a sore thumb. I played jazz vibes in school for a while but prefer drum set because you can play simple time and then add fills and more complex patterns as your comfort level improves. You just practice the beat or fill you want to play at home and then one day spring it on everyone at a rehearsal or gig. It takes courage but it's a rush. My hihat leg used to shake at the knee a bit in advance of a solo part. Some degree of nervousness actually improves your performance.
