I started playing at age 10. Employing pots and pans and plastic pails with horrible cheap sticks that were badly warped. My first real drum is one I still have in my possession: a Ludwig
snare drum that still had cat gut snares and calf skin heads. The cat gut snares are gone as are the calf skin heads, but it still puts out crisp, sharp beats. It is a nickel plated brass shell and the hoops are rather thin and sharp and they chew up sticks quick when playing rim shots.
My first drum set was an Apollo four piece set with Super Zyn cymbals. My next set was a Slingerland four piece made in 1964. I bought an additional four piece Ludwig
set made in 1962 with nickel plated hardware and put the two sets together. I now play a 11 piece Ludwig
set and use a Supraphonic 400, which I bought in 1976. My cymbals are Paiste
Signature Series fast crash in 14 , 16 , and 18in, with Zildjian
new beat hi-hats and a Paiste
Sound formula 20in flat ride. I still have one of the Super Zyn cymbals which I have refinished and coated with clear high gloss polyurethane and it looks new at age 50+ . My heads are all Remo
ebony pinstripe top and bottom and the drums are white. Vic Firth
