A lot of drummers do this to save space and money. A cymbal stacker is a lot cheaper than a whole cymbal stand. Also, if you do it right you can even make it look pretty cool. I personally don't really like stacking as this makes the top cymbal too high for my preference

I use a 4" long stacker for an 8" Splash Cymbal above my 18" Crash. Given the small diameter of the splash I haven't had a problem with the Splash getting in the way. I'm not sure I would want to stack anything over a 10" in this way. Stackers are pretty cheap, I would say get one and try it.

The females are stacked better.

i had a 10" splash stacked over my 18" crash/ride (which i mostly use for crashing) but didn't use it for very long, it got in the way and i didn't use it very much. the other thing you should consider is an arm that clamps to the cymbal stand under one of your current cymbals. a friend of mine had an 8" splash inbetween his crash and hi tom, and it worked really well. if i was to ever mount my splash back up this is where i would put it.

*edit* looks exactly like this
