Yeah, that's a great groove. It's amazing to note some of the beats that Gadd has come up with over the years - beats that make their songs instantly recognizable just from the drum part.
I vaguely recall (95% sure that I'm remembering this correctly) reading somewhere that originally, Paul Simon had intended for "50 Ways..." to have a sort of bossa feel for the A sections. IMO, this is one of those rare instances where, as good as the songwriting is, the drum beat just about makes the song - or at least, the arrangement. I don't think it would have been anywhere near as noteworthy a recording if Gadd had used a more "generic" beat.
