5 To A 4 Piece?

Is It Unheard Of To Take Off The Right Tom On A Five Piece Kit To Transform It Into A Four Piece? For 15 Years I Played On A Four Piece, And I Just Bought A Newer Five Piece Kit Off A Guy And I'm So Used To Having One Less Tom That I Can't Seem To Adjust The Other Tom Right?? I Never Really Use It Either..

Re: 5 To A 4 Piece?

I went from 5 peice to 4. If you still wanna have 5 for another note/sound just mount one of em' of a cymbal stand on the left/not on the bass. I waqs thinkin of mounting my 12 left of my 10, seen a couple drummers mount toms bigger to smaller and they moved around and yea, just sounded right the way they were able to move around teh toms.

There is lots of fun stuff you can do with the configuration.
I don't think your desire to switch to a four piece is all that odd.
About two times a year I strip my drums down to just the very basic pieces...
snare, tom, floor, bass, hi-hat, crash, ride.... and that is it.

If you have an extra stand or way to mount it to the left of your hi-hat... kinda like a
floor tom. Then you open up new ideas. Or just put it away until there comes a day
you want it.

Re: 5 To A 4 Piece?

I'm actually doing the same soon here, but I'm going from a 6 to a 5. One good thing about removing that middle tom is being able to put your ride there. Leaves it a place that's real easy to reach, and gives good access to the bell. If my sig shows up in the post it has an overview of my kit that I made on Sabian.com kit builder. Just imagine it without the far left and right toms.

Like CJDG said. If you have the right hardware you could also mount that middle tom on a stand to your right, and ditch the floor tom. Lots of possibilities. I bought a 40$ clamp from Tama that can be used to mount a tom or a boom arm off of another cymbal stand, depending on what you stick on the end of it. I just took one of the tom mounts off the bass and used it in the clamp.

Going back to your basics is always good also. Having a simple 4 piece can take away the distractions of having all that stuff available and remind you how to be creative and use what you got behind the kit. If you get what I'm saying

I recently took the 2nd rack tom off my set and would never go back to a 5 piece. Its really nice to have the ride in a comfortable postion. You just have to get used to the gap.

try mounting the tom on the right next to the floor tom. that's what i did. it's like a 1 up 2 down setup and i looks killer awsome.
