Re: What's More important FEEL or FILL?

If there's no feel to the drumming, it is not memorable, nor is it musical. Good music and good drumming have emotion -- have feel.

Buddy Rich: "You play what you feel."

John Bonham: "I also think that feeling is a lot more important in drumming than mere technique."
“I think that being original is what counts. When I listen to other drummers, I like to be
able to say, 'Oh, that's nice, I haven't heard that before.' I think that being yourself as a
drummer is so much better than sounding like anyone else."

Re: What's More important FEEL or FILL?

Hey GooveisKing,

Sounds like most of the folks who have responded to your thread have it down. Groove and feel really are king. Charlie Watts is typical of the real classic talented drummers,..he makes it look so simple, and it comes off like velvet. The fills he does are a bit hard to comprehend because they are so nicely and simply done. I get a kick out of watching some of the 80's hair band drummers where it seems like the entire song is fill. Showmanship I suppose. To keep a good dynamic going in any given song, in my humble opinion you just have to keep it simple and compliment the groovy feeling with fill. Compliment is the key word here.

Re: What's More important FEEL or FILL?

For me it's the feel before the fill. When your groovin your in a zone and then you put in a fill and it doesn't have to be a big one maybe something suddle that goes along with the groove. Finness is where it's at. When you can master the finness of a groove and fill your drumming will only get better because now you have something that sounds nice and smooth and not all chopped up like alot of the heavy metal drummers do.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Hey thundafoot (Dtxt & others)!

I couldn't agree with you more! You just got to feel it first!

Re: What's More important FEEL or FILL?

I would say they are both of equal importance,
While FEEL is important, so are fills.
However, like you said yourself, feel and groove are king.
Fills can make songs memorable, but 98% of the time, it's the groove that you remember.
I like the way you can make a drum track contrast with everything else that is going on during a song.
Lasr Ulrich, one of my idols, taught me the importance of feel, while people like Alex Lopez, Joey Jordison and Mike Portnoy taught me the importance of fills.

Feel can only ever make a song get better,
Fills however, can make OR break a song,
That's just my opinion though

Re: What's More important FEEL or FILL?

Hey HXBC,

To me the groove is like the foundation of a peice of music. Everyone needs to be in the groove to have the correct dynamic. I see alot of bands that are just getting formed having alot of filllers and not enough groovers. Fills will sound meaningless and out of place until you establish the groove and start playing together.

Re: What's More important FEEL or FILL?

I say it depends on the genre. With jazz, feel is obviously more important, but with faster death metal-esque styles, I would argue that there is not much feel involved in the playing and is therefore not as important as fill. When I play blast beats and such I just don't feel as much as I do with playing jazz or even just rock. There is less precision required for playing music that is not all speed and you can mess around with playing ahead or behind the beat to make the music sound a certain way, where as with blasting there is less room to change anything as far as feel goes.

Re: What's More important FEEL or FILL?

Hey butter!

You know I just don't have any experience with the death-metal genre. I would have to agree with you though,,, from what I do know about death-metal there just doesn't seem to be much 'feel' or 'groove' involved. Perhaps I can learn some right here on this site from the pratictioners like you!
