Re: good songs to play to?

I think there are many good songs to play to, depending on what you like to listen to. When I play along to a song rather that a metronome, I make sure it is not a live performance. Although live performances can be more exciting; a song that is recorded at a studio will more likely be in perfect time.
P.S
The speed is relative, if you are working on something you find difficult at first, then the wise thing and most beneficial thing to do is to start playing that section along to a slower tune and speed up gradually.

I agree with the AC/DC comment. About as straight forward as it gets. You might get a little bored playing something like "Who made who" but you can always throw your own interesting ideas into it.

Re: good songs to play to?

Hi!

I've been learning for about two months. A good beginners' song is 'Yellow' by Coldplay. It's the first song I learnt to play. There aren't any tricky rolls, it's pretty straight playing but it is dynamic too, with use of both the hats, ride and crash cymbals. Also a bit of variation on the kick drum in the choruses, which isn't too difficult.

'Living on a Prayer' by Bon Jovi is another one I'm looking at. A bit more technical and faster in tempo, with some rolls, but pretty straight drumming.

I'm learning 'Come Together' by the Beatles at the moment and it's really cool - introduces you to some more rolls including triplets, and some ghost beats. And it's just got a good bluesy groove to sit back into. Although, Ringo's patterns are a little wacky at times, but you can adapt them around the drum kit to make it feel more natural to you.

I generally just stick on my Ipod and try and play along to whatever is playing. This encourages me to express a bit of creativity instead of just reading drum music or playing a piece beat for beat, and it gets you familiar with different feels.

I downloaded a fair bit of drum music from the internet - it's out there if you're into that kind of thing. I want to learn 'Creep' next by Radiohead.

Let us know what you're playing. It's always good to get ideas as a beginner.

Re: good songs to play to?

Bad Company, AC/DC, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones are all good to play to when you are in the mood to grove to the music. As a beginner, it's better to listen to them a few times to pick up the beat and then practice with the music playing. Later, you can enhance the song with your own variations of breaks and rolls to suit your taste. I enjoy playing along with Bad Company by adding more of the cymbols and bass drum notes. But, each to his own taste.

When I listen to a band playing live, I tune in to the drummer to see and hear what the drummer brings to the party. Does the drummer flow with the band or they just background noise.

For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica is pretty simple.
although at the same time, it tests you skills with fills and timing
as well as coordination. Very nice song to practice.

Re: good songs to play to?

i recommend some AC\DC songs, all really generic and 4\4 time, real easy to play to, try it some time. Back in Black is best for beginning with them.
