I'm getting a new Gretsch Catalina ash kit for my B-Day next month!
I'm going to post a huge thread when I get it with pics, thank you's to all
the people in the forum that helped me, and a lot more.
Again, have fun, enjoy your stay, and I'll see you around.
Later.
Sounds like you're having fun and that's what playing is all about! I just bought a slightly used set of 2009 Gretsch Catalina Maple (Cherry Red) drums, so we will see what the new kit sounds like compared to my vintage Gretsch? BTW have a great Birthday!

Thanks mono!
Did you see the limited addition Catalina maple set on
Musiciansfriend.com?
It's only $600!
here's a link...
Buy Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple Fusion Limited Edition Drum Shell Pack with Free 16" Floor Tom | Shell Packs | Musician's Friend
I think it was pretty cool.
I always have fun playing.
I will probably make a video on it to show you what it sounds like.
Cheers, and happy drumming!

I checked out the link, but didn't see the set you mentioned? When I clicked on the link you attached it gave me the new Gretsch sets, but I didn't see theat particular set, and I would like to.

Thanks for the tip, I checked them out. I bought mine with soft cases (except for the 16" floor tom) shipped to Neche, ND. (about a 4.5 hour round trip from my house including going thru both US customs and CND. customs) for $725. They were used for recording by a band four or five times and are like new. I would like to get a 13" x9" matching tom and soft cases for the 16" floor tom and one for the 13" tom if I can find one?

Barry

Thumbs down Re: Newbie to the site.

OK I finally got my Catalina Maple Gretsch kit home and set-up. Unfortunately two of the drums were damaged in shipping. They are playable, but I ended up buying those two drums and another new snare off eBay from a music store selling the same kit in pieces. So I now have an extra 22" x 18" Deep Cherry Red UV Lacquer Finish bass drum with some marks in the finish and a matching 14" x 14" floor tom with a damaged bearing edge (still sounds great) and the matching snare, tom GTS brackets and dbl tom post from the same new kit. I will now be selling the bass and floor tom. The bottom line is the kit sounds pretty good, even with the cheaper Evans (they make the Gretsch clear heads on these kits) heads. New batter heads on the toms would improve the sound some more. The bass drum has a tremendous punchy thump, the snare is very good as are the toms. A good deal for the money. The bass is 4" deeper that my 1979 Gretsch kit and has a deeper sound which I like.

Now for the damage issue... I'm never using UPS ever again, they denied the insurance claim, and the clown who sold me the kit turned out to be a jerk!

That's life, moving on!

Mono,

Could you post the name of the guy who sold you the kit? I would like to make sure someone else doesn't get screwed too.

The kit sounds like a dream the way you describe it, I am sure you will get many years of service out of it.

I'm reluctant to name names for many reasons, but I do not want other possible buyers to get burned. His website is (kennycharlesmusic.com) His last name is not Charles, which is a stage name. One thing that bothered me was, he said that he was a Christian, and when things went wrong suddenly he is a vulgar, nasty piece of work. He may have had good intentions in the beginning, but when I notified him about the damage, and suggested that his packaging may have led to the problems, things deteriorated quickly.

One more thing about the 2009 Gretsch kit, the steel rims are very crappy, with obvious issues, very unlike my 1979 kit, but that's the quality you get for the price and offshore manufacturing! You can't beat Canadian and American made products!

Oh...
That stinks Mono.
You learned a lesson didn't you?
Always know your sources.

I agree.
American custom drums by Gretsch are amazing!
But the only problem is their price tag.

Boy, what I would give to have a 7-piece American custom with a white
to black sunburst finish...
