Yet another new member...... :)

Hey all,

Tenatious P here, aka Paul. Live around thirty miles west of London. Been drumming for closing in on thirty years, in church bands, studio sessions, and gigging bands. married with two girls.

Current band is a real tight covers band called Riser (RISER - The Best Band In The Land......) which is real fun.

OK - kit. Currently playing a Mapex VX in deep coffee (a real nice finish) 10,12,13, 16ft, 22"bd, with a choice of the original snare (not the best, sadly - it's the weak point of the range for me), my beloved old early 70s Premier 2000, or my brand new baby, the Pork Pie Big Black - 14*6.5, black chrome on brass with chrome tube lugs which M123 kindly supplied me for $79.99....

Hardware's predominantely the 320 series that came with the kit, but I have a few odd bits, including a very good, solid CB Drums single bass pedal which I picked up when I really needed a cheap pedal fast, and I've yet to stop using it.

Cymbals are mainly a mix of Zildjian (ZHT 16" fast crash, Planet Z hats, an 80s Avedis 16" thin crash) with a wuhan 12 inch splash, and a couple of old Tosco cymbals (16" crash and 20" ride) that still sound real good.

Once I can find my way round, I'll post some pics, but for now, howdy doodly-doo!

Welcome to DSC, Tenacious P. Is that "tenacious" on the drums or in some other way?

We're always glad to have veteran drummers join us here. Share some wisdom, tell some stories or some lies.

That Big Black has all maple shells, right? How does she sound?

Look forward to seein' some pic, and howdy-do back at ya. Don't be a stranger.

"veteran"? You know how to make friends, don't you....

The Big Black's actually brass, not maple... sounds great though!

OK - off to make up some stuff about how it was back in the olden days.....

Lol, Good stuff! "Back in nineteen and aught eight we whittled our own sticks........."

I think by veteran dtx meant a working drummer, now if he had said "seasoned" all bets are off!

Welcome aboard Tenatious P, make yourself at home.

Cool Re: Yet another new member...... :)

It's useful being a 'veteran' - all those years in the wilderness sending messages to my clan on the other side of the swamps comes in handy, because not everyone can take the middle riff from Muse's Hysteria and subliminally plant "these guys are good - book them again" into people's minds.....

Anyway - tales from the old days......

I started off back when your basic jobbing drummer had no cash for drums, and basically scrounged what he could find to play - the number of cheap crappy kits I've known is a book in itself.

My first kit was a Japanese Pearl Export knock-off copy, which was probably made in that most durable of all woods, plywood. To my then untutored ears, it sounded ok, but then I was young and knew no better. What WAS nice though, was the cymbals and snare that came with the kit. It has a set of Meinl headliner hats (OK but not that great now), a Tosco thin crash (Stamped Sabian, and better than any of the others I've ever found) and a Tosco ride that's still in regular use. The snare was a Premier 2000, 14*5.5, chromed aluminum. Real nice, and very collectable now - they regularly go for around $300 on cl and ebay. Mine has a few flakes of chrome missing, but still sounds great.

So now I'm still in the land of the impoverished drummer, as my income has been met and exceeded by such things as wife, kids, mortgage, etc, so all upgrades need to be planned, costed, and done properly. The next things I need to get are some new heads for the toms and a double tom stand, so that when called for, I can express myself on a full 8, 10, 12, 13, 16 rollaround.

That'll do for now - gotta go back and do some work! Seez y'all later!

Re: Yet another new member...... :)

TENATIOUS,
After 30 years I was considered a "veteran" teacher, so I just thought a drummer closing in on 30 years of playing deserved recognition for his extensive experience. A thousand pardons.

Judging from your swamp duty and subliminal messaging tactics, I see that you are also "special forces." This explains the brass drumset, I imagine. I don't think I've ever heard one. Does it have a "special force"? A special sound?

Love the description of the first kit. We loved those first kits, didn't we? But our ears do become more discriminating over time.

Yeah, well, I'm going to stop writing on this forum.

I loved my first set as long as I had it, but my second set sounded better.

Leaving for Patagonia.
